What a hectic few months it’s been over here at Dean Jones Hairdressing, from our refurbishment of downstairs, to The Edinburgh Festival and our team trip down to London for Salon International 2018. It has indeed been crazy but we’ve enjoyed every minute!

Refurbishment of Downstairs

Firstly thank you to all our clients for your patience throughout the renovation process, it was noisy, dusty and Dean was uncontrollable, but we are so pleased with our new downstairs salon space. With our Senior Assistant Neve coming up the ranks we look forward to making full use of this new salon space, and creating loads more gorgeous looks along the way. This can also be used for Private Bridal Parties or Birthday’s where we can organise a full glam squad to look after you in your own space. We hope you love our new area as much as we do!

Edinburgh Festival

It’s always our favorite time of the year. Edinburgh just blooms with entertainment and cool pop up bars / restaurants. We made sure to have a team outing to Assembly Room’s drag show ‘Yummy’ which was a real giggle and if you get the chance to next year definitely give them a visit.

Of course our most favorite part of this crazy month is meeting a whole bunch of people from all over the globe and making them feel beautiful or rescuing them from the rain.

Our New Manager!!

We had a very exciting promotion this quarter for our Senior Stylist from the very start – Linden! She is now salon manager, taking care of not only salon education, being a mum to all staff and now taking care of a whole bunch of serious stuff. Congrats to our salon OG.

Salon International 2018

The whole team took a trip down to London at the start of October. Apart from a disastrous journey down, with weather warnings and a 3 hour delay – We all had a blast! We spent the whole Sunday going around London’s Excel Center trying and testing new products and getting inspired from a whole bunch of famous stylist’s showcasing their work on stages scattered around the arena.

We were even lucky enough to get a tour and insiders glimpse of our favorite London salon “ Not Another Salon”, their wacky colours and creative styles inspires us daily, as does salon director Sophia Hilton’s hilarious Instagram posts. We got a whole salon tour and some of the guys managed to bump into Sophia after her seminar at the tradeshow and get some selfies. Education, Education, Education

We’ve had a whole bunch of courses over this half of the year, with our Director Dean recently graduating with his Wella Master Colour Award. We also visited Sophia Hilton’s Balayage Bash (which we then had to bring back to the salon and do our own salon education evening),Stylists got inspired with Wella Educator Abby with the launch of new Koleston Perfect with Me+ whilst our Assistant’s got creative at the launch of the all new GHD Platinum+.

Festival Inspiration

Festival season is upon us and there are some seriously enviable styles out there that you can recreate at home in a few simple steps with the help of the Dean Jones Hairdressing team. Think Coachella chic all summer long!

Space Buns

This intergalactic trend isn’t going anywhere and we love it. It is super easy to create. This looks amazing with half your hair left down or all of your hair tied into two buns at either side of your head. Start by gathering the amount of hair you would like in each bun and tie these into high ponytails at each side. Gently back comb your hair to create volume and texture before wrapping around the hair tie and securing with hair grips. Pull some pieces of hair loose to get that ‘undone’ finish perfect for festivals. We love hair glitter and jewels so if you are feeling creative add some of this to your hair parting and your festival style will be instantly elevated.

Hat Hair – Don’t Care

  

Hair feeling flat and a little bit hungover as you hit day 3 of festival fun? Hide it with an on trend hat and no one need know. Simply wave the ends of your hair softly and style with your favourite hat. Pimp Your Pony

A super easy way to add an edge to your average ponytail and perfect for day two or three hair at your fave festival this summer. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

What a whirl-wind year we’ve had, from multiple award ceremonys, to in salon party evenings. We’ve had a ball and here’s some of our highlights for you all..

We took a trip to the Scottish Business Awards to a jolly down to London for the entire team to attend the Salon Business Awards with Salon Business Magazine  which are just some of our top memories. Being nominated for Best Local Salon amongst only six from UK was a massive honour and we hope to bag a win next year! At the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards we were also blessed to win the Highly Commended Recognition Award which we were delighted with and so thankful for too.

We have also had lots going on in the salon too with the Big Hair Do in association with CreativeHEAD Magazine in September. A big party in the salon with complimentary bubbles, braid and blowdry bars and lots more. The team loved this night and it was great to meet so many friends and family of our current clients. Our festive retail event was another chance for us to get together with some mulled wine and mince pies to help you get your hair ready for the party season with desk to dancefloor looks demonstrated by our team of experts. We also used these fabulous fun evenings to give something back and each time we raised money for charities that are close to our heart. With £300 going towards the Little Princess Trust and another £300 going towards less fortunate kids across Edinburgh’s Christmas presents with Salvation Army.

Our director Dean is also in the tide line of passing his Master Colour Course with Wella and we also introduced Couture Colour in the salon to give you guys more choice and confidence in our colour skills!

We have featured in lots of magazines, newspapers and had some great blogger reviews this year that we love to share with you.

Christmas Party Looks

Christmas party season is in full swing so here’s two super simple fool proof step by steps help you get your glam on this festive season.

Quick Glam Waves 

1. Spritz some Sebastian Stylbrid 9 through your hair to give a matte texture and add some hold

2. Use your curl wand and take small sections of hair and twist away from your face

3. Repeat this on the other side

4. Take a wide tooth comb and soften the curls to dress them out and create glam waves

Big Hair Do 2017

Wednesday 27th of September saw us take part in this years Big Hair Do event with Creative Head & LayeredOnline, from Braid Bars, Blowdries, Styling Stations, Consultations, Canapes, Charity Raffles, Retail Offers, Selfies, Bubbles and much much more!

 

Back for their third triumphant year, Big Hair Do took 100 salons all over the UK by storm, and we were lucky enough to be one of them.

We helped raise funds for Little Princess Trust charity with some great raffle prizes and some very lucky prize winners. We managed to raise a total off …  £158 but we’re going to double it and take it to a total of £316!! So thank you for your generous donations.

 

As well as demonstrating styling tool techniques, dispensing hair hacks & discussing the latest trends, we also had the fabulous Make Up Artist Heather Snowie on hand giving all her top tips and solving all your make up dilemmas.

  

Complimentary Cava, canapés  and mountains of branded cupcakes helped create a party atmosphere, but not only that we also had Edinburgh’s very own Gin Queen providing us with Gin Tastings & Cocktails which went down a treat.

 

We had the fabulous Alix Mcintosh around who took plenty of snaps to show off all our  glam looks from the night. All the Big Hair Do action was captured and posted on all our Social Media outlets, but head over to our Facebook page and see if you can spot yourself in the dozens of pictures and clips from the evening.

By surprise we were nominated by the public & made finalists in this year’s Edinburgh Business Awards held at The Principle on George Street. We were in 2 categories ‘Best Edinburgh Hair Salon’ & ‘Best Local Business’ it’s so rewarding to have all our hard work noticed and we can’t thank all our lovely clients enough for voting. We all attended the awards on the 2^nd of May and went on to take home ‘Best Edinburgh Business‘  yaaay!

Thank you to all our wonderful clients for voting, what a great evening. We are now Grand Finalists at Scotland’s Business Awards being held on the 28th of May at the Glasgow Marriot.

Salon Business

Featured us as well this month, telling readers all about our ‘Blowdry Masterclasses’ why don’t you try one for yourself? At these evenings a group of up to six friends can get together over a glass of fizz and enjoy a masterclass from all the team on blowdrying and styling. The masterclass is free to regular clients provided they bring along five friends and we guarantee a great time.

We were also taken by surprise and were winners of Aprils ‘BangStyle Supreme’. What a start to December we’ve had this year!

Last Sunday we attended the 6th Annual Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards at the Crowne Plaza after receiving a very out of the blue phone call a few weeks back, informing us we were finalists woohoo!!!

We got our glad rags on and headed off to Glasgow for the ball..

It was a great evening celebrating success of  hair and beauty businesses across Scotland. We were lucky enough to be finalists for 2 awards, and got the chance the catch up with our good friends from over the bridge at ‘Spoiled Hairdressing’  who took home ‘Salon Design of the Year’ Congratulations guys!

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

If like us you like to change it up, there will come a time where you consider the much-loved option of a fringe. But unlike Edinburgh’s annual festival, a fringe is a long-term commitment, something that will stay with you for a while – not a temporary month long moment of madness!

Before you get the snip here are our Do’s and Dont’s to a successful fringe.

DOS

• Make sure you keep it up to date. It is not the sixties and the fringe has moved on so embrace a modern look.

• Try a heavy fringe to hide problem eyebrows.

• Consider your hair. What’s right for straight hair won’t work on curls.

• Use fringe friendly products. Heavy, oily products will weight it down and make it greasy.

• Don’t be afraid to pop in for regular fringe trims. Never cut it yourself EVER!

• If it’s too much of a step, then start off with longer soft bangs to test the water.

 

 

DON’T

• Rush into a fringe. It takes time and effort to keep it looking good.

• Just consider your face shape or the size of your forehead. For example if you have oily skin it means an oily fringe!

• Be afraid to fake it like Kendal Jenner.

• Go too short, unless you want to make a statement.

• Worry if you don’t love your bangs, they grow back eventually!

 

Curl me, Flatten me, GHD me !!!

We recently had an exciting in salon seminar with Morena from GHD.

Was really interesting finding out the background of the company and how they came about creating the first ever classic GHD Straightener, which all women loved when it was first launched.

So from the styling products to the Flat Irons and the Curves we’ve learned the ins and outs and we’re super excited to pass on our new found knowledge on to you.

We got to work with some models to get that extra practice that we can’t get in busy salon time..

Say I Do To Easy Wedding Hair

Hair is one of a long list of stresses when it comes to planning a wedding.

We’ve put together a 10-step guide to easy wedding hair so it’s one less thing to worry about!

 

• First things first – give us a call to book your appointment for the day of the wedding.

• Planning is always the secret to success. Start three months before the big day by chatting through your theme and the look your going for with your stylist.

• It’s always to good to have a style that you love. You’ll find great inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram. Remember that the style of your dress will affect the overall look.

• Much as we would all like red carpet  hair for our wedding, you’ll find that most celebrities have hair extensions. Your stylist will guide you to find a style that is fabulous – but realistic.

• Don’t fall into the ‘I’m growing my hair for my wedding’ trap! Keep having regular haircuts. It will keep your hair strong and healthy and a trip to the salon is a great opportunity for a bit of me time away from wedding planning.

 

• Your hair is your crowning glory so it needs to be in tip-top condition. We will recommend the best course of in-salon and at home treatments for you.

• Don’t make any drastic colour changes close to your wedding. If you do want something different, make the change as soon as possible. Your final colour appointment should be to maintain your existing colour – after all we don’t want any shocks.

• Book your hair rehearsal one month before your big day. Bring any headpieces, hairpieces or veils that you will be wearing. It’s also good to bring a bridesmaid to get their opinion and to take pictures from all angles. Remember to be honest with your stylist – this is your wedding so you need to be happy with your hair.

• Your last appointment should be two weeks before your wedding. Treat yourself to a colour freshen, trim and a treatment.

• On the big day all you need to do is feel relaxed and confident. You may be nervous but at least you know your hair looks amazing.

Christmas Party Hair

It’s Christmas party time of year again. The office is a flurry of excitement with talk of new dresses, shoes and bags. But more often than not your hair do is left to the last moment!

I have a couple of really simple rules to make sure that you hair is the crowning glory to your Christmas party outfit.

Firstly your hair is part of your look. If your dress has frills and fuss, then keep your hair sleek and simple, you don’t want to end up looking like the fairy on the top of the tree. A simple blow dry can make you look and feel fabulous.

Choose a style that will last the whole evening. There is nothing worse than starting the night out with a head of luxurious curls that end up limp and stuck to your face as you strut your funky stuff on the dance floor.

This year hair accessories are a key trend, with designers such as Dolce & Gabanna and Chanel using crystal clips and leather headbands. So why not finish your outfit with something that will make your hair look amazing.

So if you stick with these top tips you’re bound to be best dressed at this year’s night out.  And don’t forget to be good!

Blowdry

As hairdressers we often hear from our client’s…“my hair looks great when I leave the salon, but I can never recreate properly at home!” So to get you started, here are a few of our top tips to helping you achieve Great hair every day…

1. Get yourself a really good hair dryer. There is nothing worse than a getting arm-ache trying to achieve a sleek style using a hair dryer that would struggle to blow out a birthday candle let alone transform you into a groomed goddess!  There are some really good dryers that don’t cost a lot and will make a real difference to your routine – invest in one – it will be worth every penny.

2. Use your Nozzle! So many people lose or get rid of the nozzles that come with their hair dryers, but keeping hold of them is the key to a smooth sleek blow dry. When you’re drying your hair, first blast your hair to partially dry it, then get your nozzle on and use the dryer to smooth the hair in the direction that you want it to lie.

3. Having the right brush to create your style is essential. Using the wrong type of brush is like trying to eat soup with a fork – messy and a waste of time! Pay attention to the brush that your stylist uses when they are drying your hair, or just ask them to recommend the best sort of brush to achieve your style.

4. Use good quality products as recommended by your salon.  From the shampoo and conditioner, right through to the styling and finishing products you use, using high quality or salon recommended products can make the difference between good hair and really great hair. So don’t be shy, make sure you know what your hairdresser is using on your hair.
